Learn how to attach a step-up ring to your camera lens, choose the right size, and avoid common mistakes like vignetting or cross-threading.
Quick answer
A step-up ring lets you attach a larger filter to a smaller lens thread. To use it correctly, match the smaller number to your lens, screw it on straight, and attach the filter on top.
Why you might need a step-up ring
If you own filters in a larger size (e.g., 58 mm) and a lens with a smaller thread (e.g., 55 mm), a step-up ring saves you from buying duplicate filters. It also lets you share one set of high-quality filters across multiple lenses.
The trade-off is that a step-up ring adds extra height and weight, and on very wide-angle lenses it can cause vignetting (dark corners). For most standard and telephoto lenses, the effect is negligible.
Choosing the right size
The two numbers on a step-up ring always mean: small thread (lens side) → large thread (filter side). For example, a 55-to-58 mm ring fits a 55 mm lens and accepts 58 mm filters.
Common combinations include 55→58 mm, 58→77 mm, and 43→58 mm. Check your lens cap or the front of your lens for the filter thread diameter (marked with a Ø symbol).
How to attach a step-up ring in 4 steps
- Clean the lens thread: Use a blower or soft brush to remove dust from the front filter thread of your lens. Any debris can scratch the threads or get trapped between the ring and the lens. A dirty thread can cause the ring to bind or scratch the lens.
- Align and start threading by hand: Hold the step-up ring with the smaller diameter facing the lens. Gently place it on the lens thread and turn it clockwise. Do not force it — if it resists, back off and realign. Cross-threading is the most common mistake. If the ring tilts, remove it and start over.
- Tighten gently until snug: Once the ring spins smoothly by hand, give it a final quarter-turn to seat it firmly. Do not overtighten — aluminum rings can deform or bind to the lens thread. Overtightening can make removal difficult and may damage the lens thread.
- Attach the filter to the ring: Screw your filter (e.g., ND, polarizer, UV) onto the larger thread of the step-up ring. Again, start by hand and tighten only until snug. The filter should sit parallel to the lens front. If the filter does not sit flush, the step-up ring may not be fully seated. Remove and reattach.
Recommended step-up rings
- Step Up Ring 55 auf 58 mm – Filteradapter aus Aluminium: CNC-machined aluminum construction with precise threads for a reliable connection. The aluminum build keeps the ring lightweight while the precise threads reduce the chance of cross-threading when you attach it to your lens.

Step Up Ring 55 auf 58 mm – Filteradapter aus Aluminium - Step Up Ring 58 auf 77 mm – Filteradapter aus Aluminium: Allows using large 77 mm filters on a 58 mm lens thread. This is a popular combination if you own a set of 77 mm filters and want to use them on a standard zoom lens with a 58 mm thread.

Step Up Ring 58 auf 77 mm – Filteradapter aus Aluminium - Step Up Ring 43 auf 58 mm – Filteradapter aus Aluminium: Enables 58 mm filters on a 43 mm lens, common on compact or vintage primes. If you have a small prime lens (43 mm) and already own 58 mm filters, this adapter lets you keep using them without buying a separate set.
